If there is one medical condition that most men dread, it is infertility. Infertility in males can be described as the inability of a man to impregnate an otherwise fertile female despite a whole year of unprotected (for example, without the use of condoms) sexual intercourse.
While infertility in some men may be due to several reasons like hypogonadism, idiopathic issues, testicular defects, and an interruption with sperm transportation which may be due to an infection or even a vasectomy.
However, the use of certain steroids medicines can also cause male users to experience infertility. This guide reveals three (3) of those steroids for bodybuilding that can adversely affect your family jewels.
I. How do Steroids Medicines Cause Infertility
Anabolic steroids are drugs that are designed to imitate the properties, functions, and effects of your body’s natural hormones like testosterone and growth hormone.
The reason why steroids medicines are created to mimic these two hormones is because testosterone and growth hormones are responsible for the male sexual characteristics, growth of skeletal muscle tissue, and the increase in bone density in your body.
When it comes to bodybuilding, skeletal muscle growth and increased bone density are very desirable. In addition, the effectiveness of anabolic steroids can also be seen in the energy, strength, and stamina gains that they provide bodybuilders.
These gains are also provided by testosterone in its natural state, but because the level of natural testosterone in the body is regulated by the brain and endocrine system, it is never released in exceedingly high amounts especially in matured males.
With steroids medicines, your testosterone level is increased way beyond the normal level in order for you to experience bodybuilding benefits. This is what steroids are used for and why they are highly sought after.
But while some steroids medicines offer a number of exciting bodybuilding gains, it must be said that the price of these benefits are seen in the side effects that manifest during their use.
Anabolic steroids that are used in running bulking bodybuilding programs which include boosting muscle tissue growth and increasing bone density can manipulate the brain into believing that the testicles are generating a sufficient level of testosterone.
The brain then responds by shutting down the production of testosterone by the testicles. This leads to shrunken testes and a drastic drop in sperm production.
In some cases, a person’s sperm count can be so low that it may actually be completely absent in the seminal fluid. So while synthetic testosterone can offer you fantastic physique and strength gains, it can also adversely affect your fertility.
II. Anabolic Steroids that can cause Infertility
Sustanon 250 injections are used to increase the level of testosterone in your body. This drug is known to be prescribed in the treatment of hypogonadism, a medical condition characterised by low testosterone levels.
Sustanon 250 is composed of different testosterone esters, such as; testosterone isocaproate, propionate, phenylpropionate, and decanoate. Sustanon is also used in testosterone replacement therapy in transgender men.
Sustanon will greatly influence the growth of your skeletal muscles as well as bone mass, but on the flip-side, it is one of those testosterone boosting steroids medicines that can cause infertility by lowering your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and this results in a low production of sperm.
Sustanon will not only provide you with synthetic testosterone, but it can equally stimulate the production of testosterone by your testicles. Sustanon is normally administered intravenously (usually in the thigh, buttocks or upper arm) and in person’s suffering from hypogonadism, the drug may be injected only once every 3 weeks.
Anavar is the trade name for Oxandrolone. Anavar and Oxandrin (another trade name) are anabolic steroids pills that are quite popular in bodybuilding because of their ability to boost the growth and regrowth of skeletal muscle tissues.
Anavar also helps with weight gain by stimulating your metabolic rate and increasing appetite. This is why Anavar is one of the steroids medicines prescribed for the treatment of a loss of appetite experienced by patients of wasting syndromes like cancer, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
When consumed, Anavar infuses with the androgen receptors of your muscle tissues, it will then interact with the DNA of your muscle cells by increasing the process of protein synthesis. This will then lead to a boost in your skeletal muscle mass, stronger muscle tissues, a repair of torn muscle fibres, and so on.
Anavar provides the body with similar testosterone boosting properties as Sustanon which offer great bodybuilding gains, but it also has the drawback of reducing sperm production leading to infertility issues in male users.
Anavar anabolic steroids pills can be used over a 6 week cycle with 15 mg taken each day for 3 weeks then 20 mg consumed daily for the remaining 3 weeks of the cycle.
Similar to Anavar, Deca-Durabolin was initially designed for the treatment of person’s suffering from wasting syndromes. In addition, Deca is used in treating anemia, and brittle bones or osteoporosis.
But quite like Sustanon, Deca is administered intramuscularly. Deca is one of those steroids medicines that can be used for running both a weigh gain (bulking) or a weight loss (cutting) bodybuilding program.
Deca will increase your red blood cell count to promote better energy and stamina. This anabolic steroid will also boost your recovery period from torn or damage skeletal muscle fibres.
However, despite the anabolic bodybuilding gains that Deca provides, it will deceive your brain and endocrine system into believing that you have sufficient testosterone levels which in turn causes your testicles to produce less than normal testosterone.
Deca will also reduce your FSH and as a result, you will generate very low sperm or none at all in extreme cases. Some bodybuilders stack Deca with other steroids like Dianabol (D-bol) for greater anabolic effects or they just run a standalone Deca cycle.
For a Deca and D-bol stack, the recommended dosage is as follows:
- Use 400 mg of Deca weekly over a 10 week period,
- Take 10 mg of D-bol anabolic steroids pills daily from the third week of your Deca use to the fourth week. However, from week 5 to week 10, use 20 mg of D-bol daily.
III. Steroids-Induced Infertility
As mentioned already, the use of certain steroids medicines are capable of causing you to experience infertility. These drugs can lower your sex drive and libido while also causing your testicles to shrink.
Sustanon, Anavar and Deca-Durabolin are capable of causing infertility by reducing your testosterone production and causing your FSH to be low as well. This will ultimately lead to a drastic drop in your sperm production and technically, you would be deemed to be infertile since you will be incapable of impregnating a fertile female even after a prolonged period of active sexual intercourse.
While some steroids medicines can cause infertility in male users, this medical problem is usually reversible. Infertility treatment starts with you halting the use of the steroids.
Depending on how long you have been actively using anabolic-androgenic steroids, your body may start generating sperm within a three (3) month period.
Nevertheless, there have been recorded cases where recovery from steroid-induced infertility has taken more than 24 months in some men. There are definitely other factors that can determine how soon you will recover from infertility after a prolonged use of steroids medicines. Age is one of these factors, as the older you are, the less virile you are normally, but with the use of androgenic-anabolic steroids, this only exacerbates the problem.
It goes without saying that keeping to recommended/safe steroids medicines cycles and doses will ensure that you are taking steroids within tolerable doses. In addition to this, observing good post-cycle therapy some time after your steroid(s) use is a very good way to regulate your hormones and avoid infertility issues.
